Course Restrictions and Requirements

All students seeking a degree in computer science should be aware of the following degree requirements. Students should also be aware of policies on good standing and probation. Further, while there are many optional course electives and paths through the program, all CS degree seeking students should be aware of the following additional restrictions:

Letter Grade Requirement

All courses taken to satisfy CS degree requirements must be taken for a letter grade.

Minimum Grade Requirements

In most cases, students must earn a grade of C- or better in each Kahlert School of Computing and math/science course taken to satisfy CS degree requirements. Certain courses, such as CS 2420, require higher grades (e.g., a B- or better).

Note: A grade of C or better is required in MATH courses used as pre-requisites for advanced MATH courses.

Graduate Level Courses

Advanced undergraduates are encouraged to take CS 6xxx level courses to dive deeply into an area of interest. Registration for such courses requires instructor consent; in most cases where the prerequisites are met, permission is granted.

Students taking a CS 6xxx course should speak with an academic advisor to make sure the course credit is accurately reflected on their degree dashboard.

Excluded CS Elective Courses

The following courses may not be used to satisfy a CS elective:

• COMP xxxx : No COMP courses will count as CS electives
• CS 3991 - CE Junior Seminar
• CS 3992 - Computer Engineering Pre-Thesis/Pre-Clinic/Pre-Project
• CS 4710 - Computer Engineering Senior Project
• CS 4991 - Computer Engineering Senior Thesis I
• CS 4992 - Computer Engineering Senior Thesis II

Restricted CS Elective Courses

No more than three of the following may be used to satisfy CS electives:

• CS 4010 - CS Internship
• CS 4940 - Undergraduate Research (if taken independently from capstone requirement)
• CS 4950 - Independent Study
• Combined Elective (see below)

Excluded Math/Science Elective Courses

The following courses may not be used to satisfy a Math/Science elective towards a CS degree:

• Any CS course other than CS 3130 - Engineering Probability and Statistics
• MATH 3010 - Topics in the History of Mathematics
• MATH 3070 - Applied Statistics I
• MATH 5010 - Introduction to Probability
• MATH 2250 - Differential Equations and Linear Algebra, if MATH 2270 - Linear Algebra and/or MATH 2280 - Introduction to Differential Equations are taken

Combined Elective: Multiple 1-2 Credit Hour Courses for a CS Elective

A combination of several 1 or 2 credit hour CS courses (3 credit hours total) may be used to satisfy one CS elective.

Example 1 credit hour CS courses include:

1. CS 3011 - Industry Forum
2. CS 3020 - Research Forum
3. CS 7900+ † level seminar courses.

† Such courses require instructor permission.

Theory Course as Elective

Students who take both CS 3100 - Models of Computation and CS 3200 - Introduction to Scientific Computing and Data Computing may use one to satisfy the theory restricted elective and one to satisfy a CS elective.
