DS Undergraduate Handbook (2022-2023) - Repeat Policy
University of Utah, School of Computing

Course Repeat Policy

The College of Engineering (CoE) has a strict policy on how a course may be repeated for credit, and the School of Computing enforces this policy for students pursuing the computer science degree.

Any course may be taken at most twice, and any grade, including a W, counts as an attempt. Two unsuccessful attempts results in probation. See the full CoE policy for details.

Additionally, courses taken at the University of Utah may not be taken a second time at another institution.

For some cases in which a non-academic emergency has prevented a student from completing a course successfully in two attempts, a third attempt may be accepted for credit towards the data science degree. To petition for such an exception, a student should write a formal letter to the School of Computing Undergraduate Committee, ensuring that it meets these requirements:

  • The letter must contain a concrete and detailed plan for success in a third and final attempt, enumerating points of struggle from the previous attempts and what will be done differently to overcome them.
  • The committee looks favorably on a plan that is proactive and makes good use of resources for success.
  • The letter must also contain a draft of the student's proposed schedule for each week, including all classes and all commitments outside of class. The schedule should demonstrate adequate time is being spent attending class, as well as doing assignments and studying outside of class. Please complete and attach the following form: Time Audit Worksheet
  • The letter should contain your name, University ID number, and the date.
  • To Petition: complete the following form: Third Attempt Request Form .

Students who are found to be enrolled in a course for a third attempt without approval may be removed after the start of classes or may find the course not considered toward degree status.
